After setting out the profiles around the site, the diggers moved in and we began work on the foundations, laying deep strip foundation, which were inspected and approved by the local building inspector and warranty provider.
The foundations provide the base for the block below structural slab. The blockwork is laid around the perimeter walls and internal sleeper walls. This provides support for the pre-fabricated block and beam floor.
After that a beam and block floor has been laid. Beam and block floors are becoming more and more popular as they use pre-stressed concrete beams, can be laid in a day and eliminate the risk to ground floors of soil shrinkage or heave. They allow for cross flow ventilation under the house with air bricks being installed to the external brickwork facade. On top of this we will be laying 140mm coursing blocks around the perimeter and along the line of the internal walls. This will help us reach an improved U-value as we can accommodate thicker insulation.
The erection of the Benjamin Allen structural timber frame will be the next build stage.
Stay tuned for further updates on the keys stages of the build.
