Our client had been living in a period 2-bedroom house which was ideal for a couple, but when their twins were born, they were determined to find a traditional family home with a larger garden which would be suitable for bringing up a family. They were searching the market and by luck came across a garden plot in Worth, West Sussex. The plot had detailed planning permission to construct a 4-bedroom 2200sq.ft. family home which would be perfect for their growing family.
The planning was for a very boxy cottage style house with little character, but the size was perfect. Once they purchased the plot they then approached Benjamin Allen Bespoke Homes with their ideas. “We went back to planning and adapted one of Benjamin Allen’s standard designs to meet our family needs, ‘The Ashurst’, which was of Sussex style and very much a traditional family home was very in keeping within this particular area of Worth, with its Saxon church being a stones’ throw away”.
The couple worked with Benjamin Allen’s architect to devise a layout with which would give them a spacious, open plan kitchen/dining/family room on the ground floor so they could be in full view of their new arrivals at all times. Upstairs, they requested four good sized bedrooms, two of which had en-suite bathrooms and a shared family bathroom. Constrained by the narrow shape of the plot, this house is perfect as it eliminates any overlooking issues as all rooms face to the front and rear of the house, leaving only obscure windows for the bathrooms on the side elevations. To provide extra storage facilities Benjamin Allen Bespoke Homes proposed locating the new double garage in front of the house to one side, as space on this particular plot was tight.
With planning permission granted for the Sussex style house, Mr and Mrs Crouch, not having any knowledge within the building industry decided to take advantage of Benjamin Allen’s full turnkey construction service. This option involved Benjamin Allen project managing the self-build and using their own supply chain for the each stage of the build process. Mr & Mrs Crouch were still involved in the decision making and selecting options but the worry of organising the construction process and carrying out the work was down to Benjamin Allen Bespoke Homes.
In June 2004 work progressed on site with the construction of the foundations and ground slab. Benjamin Allen Bespoke Homes sent in their shell team to erect the timber frame, creating a watertight shell in just two weeks. Once the timber frame was complete Benjamin Allen Bespoke Homes arranged for the roofer to attend site to install the clay tiled roof and for the internal trades to commence. The entire house was completed in just 6 months, providing Mr & Mrs Crouch with a fantastic traditional family home which the whole family could enjoy.
